Technical Tours

There are a lot of exciting things to see in Portland from a technical perspective. Portland continues to be on the cutting edge regarding transportation and there’s a long history of support for light rail and streetcar service.

    • Historic Columbia River Highway The Historic Columbia River Highway is located along the south side of the Columbia River between the cities of Troutdale (15 miles east of Portland) and The Dalles (90 miles east of Portland). This National Historic Landmark was designed as both a tourist facility and major economic route between eastern Oregon and Portland; however, portions of the highway were sacrificed for construction of the water‐level route that became I‐84. The Oregon DOT is restoring several of these segments for non‐motorized use. As a part of the tour a picnic lunch will be provided at Eagle Creek, the first recreational area created by the USDA Forest Service in 1915. An hour‐long walk into the Mosier Twin Tunnels will expose participants to the major restoration work accomplished to date on the Highway. Commentary will be provided by the President of the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway, Jeanette Kloos.
    • The Portland Aerial Tram is a 3,300 linear foot bicable aerial tram rising 500 feet over Interstate 5, the Lair Hill neighborhood and Terwilliger Parkway. Opened in January 2007, the Tram is an exciting new addition to Portland's skyline, while also being a practical, efficient and "green" transportation link between neighborhoods, the OHSU Marquam Hill campus, and the South Waterfront District.
    • The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Lab at Portland State University is one of the most advanced traffic labs in District 6. The lab has 3 stateoftheart rooms and includes student workstations, a realtime fiber optics feed from 80 regional traffic cameras, video display wall, a regional archived data user service, and a traffic signal lab. The tour will highlight current research activities, demonstrate the PORTAL data archive, and the traffic signal lab, where transit signal priority research has been conducted.
    • When the Portland Bus Mall opened in 1978, it was heralded as one of the most successful examples of combining urban design, transportation, and redevelopment. The tour will highlight the ongoing construction that will establish a balanced design that accommodates automobiles, trucks, buses, light rail vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
    • Green Streets are where the concepts of sustainability meet reality. This technical tour will exhibit some examples in the Portland Metro region that has lead to our community’s leadership in the emerging technology of Green Street designs.  Green Street sites included on this tour will include swale and planter retrofits, porous pavements, and a largescale new development with multiple Green Street elements.  Discussion regarding stormwater management function, traffic calming, pedestrian interaction, and maintenance will be generated.
    • The Portland Bicycle Tour highlights some of the innovative bicycle facility designs that make Portland one of the top cities for cycling in North America. The approximately 11 mile tour will start and end on the Willamette River near downtown, and will focus on bicycle facilities in Portland's historic Eastside "streetcar suburbs." The tour will highlight the design of "Bicycle Boulevards": lowvolume bike routes that are increasingly popular among Portland's cyclists. Other aspects of the tour will include pavement markings, wayfinding, bridge treatments and signalization.

Guest Tours

Portland Tour by Land & Water
This is a land and water tour you won’t forget! The Portland Duck is an unsinkable amphibious tour vehicle you will take for a 2½ hr tour. View the city’s favorite sites and then splash into the Willamette River – all without ever leaving your seat! There will be a no‐host dim sum lunch at the Fong Chong Restaurant. Dim sum (“little token” in Cantonese) is a light meal served with Chinese tea, with a variety of choices from savory to sweet. Rates are very reasonable and you pay by the number of places you have after you are through eating! Please bring small bills. After lunch, you will walk just two blocks to the Classical Chinese Garden (Lan Su Yuan is Chinese for “Garden of the Awakening Orchids”). Winding walkways, a bridged lake, and open pavilions frame this exquisitely arranged landscape of over 500 species of plants, trees, water, stone, architecture and poetry. We will have a special tour guide show us the details of harmony and tranquility with surprises at every turn in this incredibly beautiful place.

Portland Walking Tour (Waterfront & Underground)
Downtown Portland is filled with artwork, fountains, old & new parks, and interesting architecture. This walking tour tailored for our group begins with Pioneer Courthouse Square, the center of today’s downtown and home to countless festivals and exhibits. The tour continues through downtown, past art galleries, antique shops, the Pearl District, and the riverfront with its walkers, cyclists and people just admiring the view! We will walk about 1 1/2 miles and take 21/2 hours to do it. After the walking tour, we will head for Hobo’s Restaurant for a sandwich and soda served on their terrace. After resting and eating, we will descend into the city’s unsavory past. We will be guided underground for an oral and visual history of this notorious environment that gave Portland’s old waterfront a bad reputation. These “Shanghai trade” tunnels survived from 18501941. We will see holding cells, deadfall trapdoors, unearthed artifacts, and incredible underground architecture. The Portland Underground Tour is unique and has been featured on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, Weird U.S., and more. It is 1½ hours long. Be prepared for stairs, ladders, and dirty conditions. Dust masks will be available.
