Topic: FHWA will present on the 2019 update of the FHWA Traffic Analysis Toolbox Volume III: Guideline for Applying Microsimulation. They will provide an overview of the updated guidance and dive into the dangers of applying data-scarce methods in a data-rich environment. One of the major changes in the Guideline is the addition of cluster analysis. Learn what is cluster analysis, why it is important for developing model inputs and providing a better understanding of system operations. Randy Johnson of DKS Associates will then provide a brief cluster analysis case study for a notoriously congested segment of I-5 through Portland, Oregon. Next, Chris Melson, ODOT's Transportation Planning Analysis Unit Manager, will provide an overview on the latest updates of ODOT's Analysis Procedures Manual. Finally, we will open up the floor for a roundtable discussion. Discussion topics may include how do we integrate the FHWA guidance into our typical project processes? What are the schedule and budget implications? Understanding the value of cluster analysis in applications that do not involve modeling.
