April luncheon hosted by the SimCap Subcommittee
Wildfire Evacuation Planning Using Simulation-Based Dynamic Traffic Assignment Date: Tuesday, April 30th, 2024 Location: Virtual via Teams OR in-person Luncheon The Portland Building, 1120 SW 5th Ave, Portland - Room 218 Time: 11:30 PM - 12:00 PM (in-person networking and provided lunch) 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM PST (in-person presentation and webinar) Cost: Free Presenter: Randy Johnson, DKS Associates Moderators: Randy Johnson and Matt Dorado, Oregon ITE SimCap Co-chairs The threat of wildfire looms large for communities in the West, with fires growing in size and intensity as factors from drought to rising temperatures to a history of fire suppression amplify the conditions that can lead to catastrophic blazes. With many communities unprepared, recent events have resulted in tragic outcomes. Wildfire evacuation planning offers a means to better understand local wildfire hazards and build toward fire adapted communities through the identification of key evacuation routes and how those routes perform under the time-dynamics of specific wildfire events. Randy Johnson of DKS Associates will present on recent study efforts using simulation-based dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models to assess evacuation routes to identify capacity constraints, network resiliency, and ultimately develop recommendations for operational and infrastructure strategies to better facilitate evacuation to reduce Evacuation Time Estimates (ETEs). We will also discuss how you can work with emergency service professionals to build realistic scenario parameters and the model methodologies to capture those elements. Following this presentation, we will open the floor for a roundtable discussion. Discussion topics may include state and local requirements and guidance, private development evacuation assessment needs, analysis methods, and innovative evacuation strategies. Come learn how evacuation planning can support your journey through wildfire preparedness. Save the Date: Greater Oregon Event!

PSU Transportation Seminar Shifting Gears: Toward a New Way of Thinking About Transportation with Susan Handy of UC Davis April 26, 11:30 AM | Brown Bag Lunch | PSU, SMSU 327 The transportation system in the U.S. has been shaped by a core set of ideas that are embedded in professional practice. These ideas – freedom, speed, mobility, vehicles, capacity, hierarchy, separation, control, and technology – have produced a system in which most people are dependent on driving, with all the negative consequences that entails. Shifting to a system that offers people choices about their daily travel requires a shift in thinking on the part of the transportation profession. Friday, April 26, bring a brown bag lunch and join us in the Smith student union on the Portland State University campus with Susan Handy, author of Shifting Gears: Toward a New Way of Thinking About Transportation, published in 2023 by MIT Press. In this PSU Transportation Seminar, Dr. Handy will take a critical look at the way of thinking that, for the last century, has shaped our transportation system and consider the ways in which that thinking is – and is not – shifting. You'll learn key concepts shaping the existing United States transportation system and its limitations, along with strategies for reducing automobile dependence. Call for Winter Workshop Co-Chair
Oregon ITE’s Winter Workshop Planning Committee is recruiting for a Co-Chair! Winter Workshop Co-Chairs are responsible for planning, organizing, and hosting the annual Winter Workshop. This includes working together to develop a workshop agenda, plan activities, and recruit presenters. Please contact current Winter Workshop Co-Chair Cadell Chand if you are interested in the position or have any questions: cadell_chand@washingtoncountyor.gov. ITE Transit Committee - Bus Symbol Survey
Traffic signs in the US do not have a standard symbol for a bus crossing for a busway or exclusive BRT facility (broadside bus). Symbols for a bus stop or station (head-on bus) do exist. An ITE Transit Committee is surveying the preference of a bus crossing symbol and want your input! Over 30 countries have such symbols and the survey groups them into 8 options to consider. The survey takes about 60 seconds to complete (you provide a 1-10 rating for each symbol, but you must include one that is your best option - a 10, and one that is your least preferred - a 1). Please complete this survey by April 15. If you have any questions, there is a comment element on the survey form and you can leave an email for the survey team to get back to you. The findings will be summarized in the summer of 2024. Thank you for your input! Explore ITE - Badge Recognition Program
Explore ITE is a recognition program to encourage young professional participation in ITE. Inspired by the Girl/Boy Scout “Badges”, participants who complete a set of challenges will be awarded a “badge”. The program is an annual challenge with a unique badge for every year – there will also be prizes for high performers! Step 1: Attend an ITE-sponsored activity under each category: Social Event, Professional Development Event, and Section Meeting. Step 2: Track your completion by filling out your Badge Program Passport (see link below). Step 3: Challenge yourself to complete the activities before May 31, 2024! See attached flyer and more information here: https://westernite.org/badge-recognition-program/ ITE Transportation Project of the Year
The 2023 Oregon ITE Transportation Project of the Year Award went to Marion County and DKS for the Ehlen Road at Butteville Rd & Silverton Rd at Brush Creek Rd ARTS Improvement Project. The project introduced an intersection conflict warning systems complete with rumble strips, red flashing beacons on stop signs, and amber flashing beacons to alert motorists on Ehlen Rd of approaching traffic. Congratulations! Oregon ITE Student Chapter Grants
Oregon ITE hopes that all of our student chapters are having a good start to the year and are planning chapter events for the coming months. Remember, we are here to help, and that includes funding. Student Chapter Grants can be used for most chapter actives. A few past examples include travel to conferences and money to help build an awards case.
