We had a great program lined up with two speakers talking about signal systems.
Alison Tanaka from Kittelson and Associates talked about Applications of Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM). ATSPMs can help an agency make decisions about their traffic signal system – when to re-time signals, which corridors to review, and which equipment to replace. She gave an overview of the most common performance measures and how they can be used to make decisions, using examples from around the country including deployments in the City of Portland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
Stefan Bussey from PBOT talked about the City of Portland Signal Design Guide. The Signals, Street Lighting, and ITS Division of the Portland Bureau of Transportation recently released the first edition of its signal design guide. Stefan’s presentation described the process the City used to create the guide, highlighted some of the unique features of designing a signal within City limits, and provided resources and tips for dealing with the challenges of designing in Portland.
